The Journal extends an enthusiastic “thank you” to the 225 San Juaners and 90 Orcasites who together collected nearly three tons of litter from the islands’ roadsides and beaches April 5.

The fourth annual Great Island Cleanup was a sweeping success. Nice job, everyone.

Now for the dangerous stuff. The 25th annual Hazardous Waste Roundup is happening at the county solid waste facilities on San Juan and Lopez islands April 26 and June 21, respectively. (Orcas Island’s was April 12.)

Here’s what you can get rid of: Pesticides and other poisons; gasoline and other fuels; wood preservatives, oil-based paints and stains; resins, solvents and thinners; pool and photo chemicals; polishes, degreasers, cleaning products and mothballs; fluorescent light tubes and compact fluorescent lamps.

Over the past 24 years, almost 400 tons – yes, that’s tons – of pollutants and poisons have been safely disposed of. And economically: the county and state will dispose of up to 25 gallons of your hazardous stuff for free. (Businesses should pre-register, call 370-0534 for instructions.)

This isn’t even a close call, folks. These are dangerous materials you can rid your household of at a fraction of the normal cost.
