Lopez Fire responds to fire on Center Island

Submitted by Lopez Island Fire and EMS.

On Aug. 11, Lopez Island Fire and EMS responded at 8:45 p.m. to a fire on Center Island under the countywide Interagency Wildland Response Plan and in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

Led by squad boss Monico Mackinnon, a team of five was taken by the San Juan County Sheriff’s boat to assist the Center Island resident fire brigade. The task was to assist with a wildfire that was ignited by a structure fire that was extinguished earlier in the evening.

On arrival, our crew found a fire well under control and primarily out; they overhauled the scene using hand tools and contacted the DNR fire officer to give a size-up of the situation. All Lopez personnel were back on Lopez Island by 12:30 a.m.; DNR crews were on scene the morning of Aug. 12, checking for hot spots and continuing fire watch.
