The Friday Harbor Food Bank is proud to announce it has received a generous grant from the Honeywell Foundation to address a pressing safety issue on its property. Sadly, the safety issue has been caused by the two large trees whose roots have begun breaking through the concrete walkway in front of the building, creating tripping hazards for customers and volunteers alike.
“This grant is a big step forward in keeping our space safe, welcoming, and functional for everyone who depends on us,” said Rachelle Radonski, director of the Friday Harbor Food Bank. “These roots have not only created uneven walkways but have also started cracking the foundation of our new store addition, and if left untreated, would undermine the integrity of the structure.”
Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks. In addition to tree removal and repaving, the project includes the installation of a brand-new, permanent produce canopy. This year-round shelter will protect the Food Bank’s vibrant selection of fresh fruits and vegetables from the elements — rain or shine — while also making the outdoor produce area more accessible and dignified for shoppers.
The Food Bank served 314 households consisting of 765 individuals in the first week of June alone, and access to fresh, nutritious produce is a cornerstone of its mission. The new canopy will support that mission while improving safety and creating a more inviting space for the community.
The Friday Harbor Food Bank extends its sincere thanks to the Honeywell Foundation for investing in the well-being and dignity of islanders. Stay tuned for updates as construction begins and this exciting transformation unfolds.
