Library thanks Landbank and Island Rec | Letter

The San Juan Island Library would like to thank Island Rec and the Land Bank for their partnership in and support of our 2022 StoryWalk® Project. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Community Foundation and the Women’s Fund of SJICF for their generous financial support.

The StoryWalk® Project began with the motivation and intent to extend early literacy opportunities in our community. A StoryWalk® is an innovative way to introduce storytelling to young children while they explore outdoor spaces. An illustrated picture book is presented on a series of panels placed along walking paths.

Early literacy skills are essential building blocks to a child’s future language, reading, and writing development and learning. They help young children become kindergarten ready, often leading to better academic outcomes and less needed interventions for students as they progress into higher grade levels.

A StoryWalk® is also lot of fun for families and invites them to engage in healthy movement, exercise, and discovery of parks and hiking trails that are offered in our diverse and nature-rich community.

Summer StoryWalk® installations are currently on display at John O. Linde Community Park and the Family Park and Playground at the Fairgrounds, available for viewing through Labor Day.

Sincerely,
