Free library at Evergreen Park

Submitted by Linda Thompson.

Say hello to the Evergreen Park Little Free Library. Little free libraries are part of a worldwide non-profit network whose only goal is to promote reading. The premise is “if you build it, they will come.”

“They” are readers of all types – young, old, joggers, mommies with babes, dog walkers- anyone and everyone. “Little” refers to the petite size of the libraries, as these are general and, and sometimes whimsically, small size “houses” set upon posts in towns and countries across the globe. And, yes, there is a website; littlefreelibrary.org.

The Evergreen Park Little Free Library is located off Argyle and Spruce on Green Way. This is a town pocket park, and it is doing its best to grow into a real park. Currently, the doggie pick-up station, a small children’s play area and, the defining piece, a sign that proclaims “Evergreen Park” makes it so. This park also hosts a geocaching location, and in high tourist season, many folks wander up from the ferry line to have a go at finding the cache site.

The steward of this library is a former public librarian with a deep love of books held in the hand, and a strong determination to connect people with books. As she is often heard to say, “The secret of reading is reading.” Expect to find books for all ages and interests, but especially fiction. The rules for this library are as follows: Open: Always; Books: Free to take, free to share; Rules: Non. Except be kind and read. The steward’s fondest wish is that books taken from this library will travel near and far. Each book will bear a stamp that reads “Evergreen Park – littlefreelibrary – est. 2019-Friday Harbor, WA.”
