Stronger support from Journal expected; vote ‘Yes’ on Island Rec | Letters

Say what?

The community newspaper is not fully supporting the community service organization of Island Rec?

This is more than supporting the high school sports program.

Island Rec supports swimming program starting with a baby program to the Healthy Hearts exercise program for seniors and every age in between, with summer programs for elementary and junior high ages, off-island adventures for teens. What would we do without open gym nights throughout the rainy winter? Fun tournaments like beach volleyball or table tennis tournament?

Please remember this is where you can take a CPR or First Aid class, have teens learning how to be safe babysitters. In the summer, Camp Eagle Rock allows parents to have safe, low cost, fun outings for their children all week long from morning to night so they can work, the free Music on the Lawn and the Tie Dye T-shirts along with other craft programs at the Farmer’s Market.

How can you not support an organization that keeps us healthy and participating in activities that keep us growing and developing as a community while having fun?

Please, Journal and others, join me in submitting your ballot and supporting an organization that benefits our whole island.

— Editor’s note: We assume Ms. Mahoney is referring to the editorial in the April 22 edition of the Journal, pg. 7, in which we stated we were undecided and, indeed, a bit uncomfortable with Island Rec’s levy renewal request, which at 38.5 cents, is more than twice the amount it is today. We also credited Island Rec’s commissioners and levy renewal campaign team for making elements of the request altogether clear, concise and easy for voters to understand.
