League of Women Voters to host election forums

The election seasons heats up in October, with the local League of Women Voters sponsoring a series of candidate and ballot measure forums, beginning Monday, Oct. 7, on San Juan Island.

San Juan Island — Monday, Oct. 7, Brickworks, 120 Nichols St., 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

— Proposition 1, Charter Amendment
— Town of Friday Harbor Council, position No. 4
— Port of Friday Harbor Commission, position No. 1
— San Juan Island Park & Rec District Commission, position No. 3
— San Juan County Public Hospital District Commission, position No. 1
Lopez Island — Thursday, Oct. 10, Grace Episcopal Church, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Contested positions or seats:
— Proposition 1, Charter Amendment
— Solid Waste one-year tax levy
— Lopez Island School District No. 144 — School Board Directors No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4
— San Juan County Fire Protection District #4 — Fire commission, position No. 1
— Port of Lopez — Port Commission, position No. 3
Orcas Island — Monday, Oct. 14, Eastsound Fire Hall, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

— (The LWV-SJ forum on the Charter Amendment will be followed by an Orcas PTSA School Board Directors forum, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.)
The League of Women Voters does not endorse candidates or political parties, but does encourage informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, influences public policy through education and advocacy and does take stands on issues after study and consensus.
