Wolverines baseball ends successful season | Update

Round one in the district playoffs ended in a decisive victory for Friday Harbor’s baseball team at 4:45 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, against Concrete in Friday Harbor.

“Great all-around game,” said coach Rich Warin proudly. “One of the best games the team has played this year.”

The Wolverines made two runs in the first inning, six more in the third, while Concrete struggled to get on base. At the top of the fifth, the Wolverines scored two more, ending the game at 6:30 p.m., with a final score of 10-0.

“Rio Black pitched a two-hitter and got the win,” Warin said, adding that Nick Herko had four hits, Gavin Flaum got three and Satchel, “The Ice Man 2” Pieples made two base hits and a triple. Jason Jones had a double and added two RBIs to his statistics.

District playoffs continued Saturday, at 1 p.m., May 12 when the Friday Harbor Wolverines once again faced off first against the Orcas Vikings and then Crosspoint. The Wolverines lost to the Vikings 8-3 and lost to Crosspoint 7-2.

“After playing good, steady baseball all year Friday Harbors season came to a sudden end on Saturday,” Warin said, adding that it happens to teams in all sports at all levels when they have an “off” day, hopefully, it doesn’t happen on such a big day.

“Seniors Rio Black and Jackson Pieples played well in their last two games and will be missed,” Warin said. “There is a good core of returning players coming back from this year’s league champions next year.”
