By Coach Jack Rice
Freshman Joe Anderson put on a display as good as anything you will see on television from a PGA tour player, scoring an 8-under-par, 64.
Anderson beat the field by 13 shots and was only one shot off the course record for San Juan Golf Club. In the previous ten years of the Friday Harbor Invitational, the lowest score recorded was a 75, scored by our own Jack Hess in last year’s event.
As we get ready to head to the State Tournament in a few weeks, Orcas High School is favored to repeat as state champions. Unless Joe gets sick or breaks an arm, he is going to be difficult to beat at the State Tournament. The 50 spectators, made up of members, coaches and guests, got a treat of a lifetime to watch such a great round of golf.
After the tournament, all the players were treated to a pizza party provided by Haley’s and funded by the local Ladies Golf Association and the Golf and Tennis Foundation.
A big thank you goes to all the volunteers who helped make this such a special day for the young golfers. The members and Board at the San Juan Golf Club are the best; giving the course up for a day to host this event doesn’t go unnoticed.
