Wolverines come from behind to notch 16-15 win over Orcas

Coach Kevin Carlton knew his team could play defense.

It’s their firepower that’s taken him by surprise.

With two outs and down by a run, senior Margaret Nash drove home fellow senior Hannah Starr with the game winning run as Friday Harbor put the finishing touch on a 16-15 come-from-behind victory Friday at home over Orcas.

The Wolverines fell behind early and trailed often in what proved to be a high-scoring battle of wills. Carlton praised the tenacity of the senior-laden squad for the victory.

“I’m proud of how we fought,” he said. “We were down five times and never gave up. It shows some really good senior leadership on this team.”

With the win, the Wolverines improved to 2-1 in league. avenged a narrow loss to league rival La Conner the previous week, stayed on pace in the hunt of the league title, and tallied their 27th run in the last two games combined.

“Bottom of the seventh, with two outs, and a game-wining hit,” Carlton said. “It can’t get more exciting than that.”
