Wolverines baseball season comes to an end

The Wolverine baseball team took the district championship and headed to the state playoffs Saturday, May 18.

“We won Game 1 against Wahkiakum 5-3,” coach Rich Warin said. Senior Marshall Clark pitched that game and had seven strikeouts. “We won with great defense and pitching. Playing small ball to score our runs,” Warin explained.

Junior Ethan Germain made two great catches in left field with juniors Nick Herko and Jaden Jones making great plays in the infield, according to Warin, and senior Lucas Chevalier laid down a suicide bunt to score junior Ty Anderson from third base.

“When Wahkiamkum fell asleep on the bunt, Nick came around from second base to score,” Warin said. “We got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to win.”

The team, however, lost the second game 10-0, ending the postseason to Rainer. Warin noted that Rainer was an excellent team and that the Wolverines tied for fifth in the state.

“Our guys continued to improve all year, and we are very proud of what they accomplished. Undefeated in the league, district champions and fifth in state,” he said, adding that seniors Marshall Clark, Yadir Plaza and Lucas Chevalier will be missed next year.
