The San Juan County Health Department has scheduled sports physicals and well child exams on Aug. 13 and Sept. 3.

The San Juan County Health Department has scheduled sports physicals and well child exams on Aug. 13 and Sept. 3.

These will be physician clinics conducted by County Health Officer Frank James, M.D., and public health staff. Immunizations needed for school entry will be available.

A special fee of $40 or a current medical coupon is requested for the examination; $15 is required for each immunization. A sliding fee scale is available.

The clinics will be held at the public health office in Friday Harbor. Call 378-4474 for an appointment.

Register now for Saturday’s 8.8k Loop Run
The 31st Friday Harbor 8.8k Loop Run is Saturday.

Registration is $15 for children 12 and younger, and $20 for participants 13 and older. The fee includes the race, awards, entry into the fair and a commemorative T-shirt.

Runner check-in and day-of registration take place in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot, Argyle Avenue and Spring Street, from 7:30-9 a.m. The race starts promptly at 9:15 a.m. in front of Friday Harbor Drug.

Volunteers are needed Saturday morning to assist with registration, traffic control, timing and water stations.

Skateboard and BMX Freestyle Jam Aug. 24
Island Rec’s Skateboard and BMX Jam is scheduled Aug. 24, 12:30 p.m., at the Skate Park on the San Juan County Fairgrounds.

There will be music, an M.C. and prizes, so come out and skate, bike or cheer the participants. Registration forms are available at Island Rec’s office, online at www.islandrec.org, or on the day of the competition at the skateboard park between 11 a.m. and noon.

Cost is $10 per participant. Parent/guardian signatures and helmets are required in order to participate.

Deadline Friday to register for sports camp
Skyhawks Sports Camp is scheduled Aug. 25-29 on San Juan Island.

Mini-Hawks takes place from 9 a.m. to noon; boys and girls ages 4-7 will explore baseball, basketball and soccer through a variety of fun specialized games.

Cheerleading for ages 7-12 is offered from 1-4 p.m. Scheduled at the same time as cheerleading is a multi-sport camp featuring baseball and basketball for ages 7-14.

Steve Braun Memorial Triathlon Aug. 31
The Steve Braun Memorial Triathlon is Aug. 31 at Moran State Park, Cascade Lake Picnic Area.

Pre-race meeting is at 8:30 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m.

The triathlon consists of a .4-mile swim in Cascade Lake, a 17-mile bike ride on a scenic country road, and a 3.5-mile trail run around the lake.

Organizers say this is a comfortable and fun triathlon open to serious triathletes and those who want to challenge themselves to enjoy completing the picturesque course. Individuals can participate in one, two or three parts of the triathlon, or as a team.
