Temperatures near 40 and threat of rain today didn’t deter more than 150 islanders and visitors from participating in the fourth annual “Turkey Trot,” a 5K (3.1 mile) run and walk which started at the Best Western Friday Harbor Suites.

About 30 enthusiasts participated in the San Juan Island Trails Committee’s Bike Trails Subcommittee bike ride Nov. 1. Riders ranged in age from 4 to over 70. Riders comprised a well-rounded group whose goals include improving local non-motorized transportation and commuting options; bike safety improvements such as education, signage and multi-use trails; increasing awareness among local motorists of sharing roadways with cyclists; creating mountain bike trails, and just having a good time.
The Lopez Island School Board has hired M.R. Buffum as head coach of the Lobos boys basketball team. The season begins Monday, with the first home game scheduled for Dec. 5.

Mike Close, owner of San Juan Island Marine Center located under the Downriggers restaurant, called me the other day, saying, “You want to see some beautiful boats?” “Sure Mike, when and where?”, I replied. He then said that I must first see a recent restoration by Art Lohrey that was bobbing at his mooring just outside his office and showroom.

The Gobbler Classic Golf Tournament is Saturday at San Juan Golf and Country Club. The tournament is comprised of three-person teams. The entry fee is $50, which includes green fees.
Danny Cumming and the Western Washington University Vikings are bowl bound. The Vikings (5-3 conference, 5-5 overall) claimed a berth in the 23rd annual Dixie Rotary Bowl, thanks to a second-place finish in the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference. They were bested only by nationally-ranked Central Washington which, at 8-0, defeated all comers in conference play.
Only three boats reached the halfway mark at Patos Island and the race was called at this point. Flash, skippered by Steve Travis, finished first overall. Braveheart, skippered by Charles Burnet, finished second. Icon, skippered by Kevin Welch, finished third.

Leading 25-24 in the opening game, the Wolverines needed just one point to put the Northwest 1A/2B League’s second-place team on the ropes and themselves in the drivers’ seat.
