The Wolverines took care of business with a 14-2 victory April 20 at home over Concrete and kept their shot at a share of the league title alive.

Friday Harbor jumped out in front early and were never tested in posting the win in just five innings of play. Freshman Jean Melborne pitched a complete game in tallying the second win of her high school career.

At the plate, the Wolverines (10-5 overall, 6-3 league) proved too much for Concrete’s young pitching staff.

“Everybody hit the ball,” Head Coach Kevin Carlton said.

Meanwhile, Orcas swept a doubleheader at home April 20 against La Conner to set up a potential three-way tie for the Northwest 1A/2B League title. Orcas, the defending league champ, prevailed in all three games against the Braves this season, while La Conner swept the three-game season series against Friday Harbor.

The Wolverines, who trail the Vikings by a half-game in league standings, defeated Orcas in back-to-back games at home April 17. They could force a three-way tie at the top of the standings by winning their next three games, beginning with a doubleheader April 23 at Darrington. The Wolverines ambushed the Loggers early in the season by a score of 17-2.

With a sweep at Darrington, Friday Harbor could then force a three-way tie at the top of the league with a win over Orcas April 27 on the Vikings’ home field.

Carlton knows it won’t come easy.

“They always play well in their sandbox,” Carlton said of the Vikings. “We’ll go over there and we’ll do the best we can.”
