Lead, and game, escape Friday Harbor; Powell, Pruitt score for Wolverines | Football

The Wolverines started off with a bang. But a flurry of miscues and mistakes — a fumble here, an interception there — added up to a second-half shutout as Friday Harbor fell 37-14 at home Sept. 24 in its first of two regular-season meetings against Nooksack Valley.

The Wolverines started off with a bang.

But a flurry of miscues and mistakes — a fumble here, an interception there — added up to a second-half shutout as Friday Harbor fell 37-14 at home Sept. 24 in its first of two regular-season meetings against Nooksack Valley.

“The kids came out and had a great start, and were ready to compete,” Head Coach Darrin Scheffer said. “We had some great runs in the second half but there were a couple things, like a fumble and an interception, that we had a difficult time coming back from.”

Trailing by a touchdown early on, the Wolverines erased the deficit and tied the score at 7-7 as sophomore running back Micah Powell turned a fake punt into a 48-yard TD run in the opening period. They struck again in the second quarter when quarterback Donny Galt, a sophomore, and wide receiver Tyler Pruitt hooked up on a 30-yard touchdown pass to put the home team out in front 14-7.

That’s as good as it got for the Friday Harbor offense.

The Pioneers, thanks to a 43-yard touchdown pass and a 25-yard field goal in the waning moments of the first half of play, regained the lead before the break. They held Friday Harbor scoreless in the second half and tallied three touchdowns of their own to seal the win.

With the loss, the Wolverines fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in two tries against their Division 1A Whatcom County rivals.

The Pioneers improved to 3-1 on the eve of their 1A regional showdown Oct. 1 against Meridian.

The Wolverines amassed 210 total yards of offense — 105 on the ground and 105 in the air. Friday Harbor defensive front gave up only 137 yards on the ground, but the Pioneers, with quarterback Tyler Perry clicking after the break, notched 336 yards through the air. Perry completed two TD passes in the first half and rushed for three more after the break.

“We definitely did show improvements,” Scheffer said. “We did make some mistakes but the list is getting shorter. I’m really proud of the way our offensive line and the job that they did.”

Next: The Wolverines are on the road Oct. 1 at Lynden Christian. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
