The Friday Harbor baseball team needed just five innings to notch its first victory of the season, tagging La Conner with a decisive 12-0 defeat on the road Tuesday, March 25, in the team’s league opener.

Junior Gabe Lawson proved to be a one-wrecking crew against the Braves. Lawson tossed a 2-hit shutout over five innings and drove in six of the team’s 12 runs with a single, a triple and a home run. Seniors Peter Holt and Mitch Coleman had two hits apiece in the lopsided win.

With the victory, the Wolverines improved to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in Northwest 1A/2B League play. They stumbled in the first two games of the year, falling 12-0 to Overlake at home in the 2014 season opener, followed by a 10-5 loss on the road to regional Division 1A rival Nooksack Valley, Saturday, March 22.

The Wolverines travel to Chelan for a double-header Saturday, and are back home Monday, March 31, to square off against Blaine at Hartman Field; game time is 4:30 p.m.
