Golfers look to strong season | Spring sports preview

Twenty boys and three girls have made the trip out to the San Juan Golf and Tennis Club each day since Feb. 27, weather permitting, to practice for a spot on the Wolverines golf squad.

The golf season lasts almost three months, with the final round of the state championships held on May 24.

The golfing program at Friday Harbor High School attracts students for a variety of reasons.

“I love the idea that I can do this for the rest of my life,” said Hallie Hargrove. “I don’t want to be cheerleading at 40.”

Anna Romeo, who recently moved to San Juan Island, started playing golf because injuries in other sports caused her to take up the clubs as rehabilitation.

Joe Stewart, a senior who while on the basketball squad was one of the more intense, motivating players joked, “It’s a little more laid back, and a little more friendlier; there is not as much yelling in golf!”

Dylan Posenjak was introduced to the game at age 13 by his mom and dad, who are both avid golfers.

“I liked it because I felt I was a natural at it,” Dylan said.
