The Friday Harbor Wolverines’ girls soccer season got off to a nice start with a solid 4-0 win over 2A South Whidbey, Wednesday at home.

The win was especially gratifying for the seniors, whose previous experience against the Falcons going back to 2007 were 3-6, 0-6 and 1-4 losses. This year’s mix of new and established players has come together quickly, and the team gave the large home crowd an entertaining performance.

In the first 20 minutes, the Wolverines moved the ball smartly and just missed an early score as junior Jenny MacDonald‘s shot off three passes hit the post. All the effort was rewarded as senior Hannah Starr finished two from distance at the 22nd and 34th minutes. The first goal was assisted by senior Elle Guard; the second was unassisted.

The game featured the debut of three new players. Freshman Emma Brand looked like a veteran at both outside defender and in the midfield, and sophomores Miranda McPadden and Teagan Serna scored at the 43rd minute and 63rd minute respectively. The game’s third goal was assisted by Guard, the fourth by junior Rebecca Leff.

The defensive unit of seniors Megan Goudie and Maggie Andersen, with juniors Larissa Nash and Liz Taylor, now playing as a flat four, ensured that junior keeper Rhiana Franklin had little to do.
