There’s no place like home.

A road-weary Friday Harbor volleyball team claimed its first match of the season with a three-game sweep at home Sept. 25 over Mount Vernon Christian.

With the victory, the Wolverines put an end to a string of four straight losses, all of which came on the road, and cashed in big on their first match at home.

Friday Harbor (1-4) blanked the Hurricanes, winless so far this season, 25-16, 25-14, 25-19.

“Home is a good place for us,” senior Kelsie Carlton said. “The crowd really gets us pumped up.”

Evidently, going toe-to-toe against the Hurricanes gets Friday Harbor pumped up as well. Though wins have been scarce the past three seasons, the Wolverines tallied their third-consecutive match win over Mount Vernon Christian, dating back to last season. Senior Meaghan McCormick hopes the decisive win proves to be a catalyst for change.

“It’s fun to get a win,” McCormick said. “We tend to play down to other people’s level, but we didn’t do that in this match.”

In a see-saw battle at home against Meridian, the Wolverines seemed to be right on course.

Though trailing 2-1 in games, Friday Harbor had a decisive 10-5 lead in game No. 4 and appeared well on its way to forcing a fifth and final game. But the Trojans rallied to tie at 11-11, and then turned a 10-to-5 point run into a commanding lead and runaway win on the road.
