The Wolverines got a cruel lesson about who not to put on the Homecoming party guest list.

The Nooksack Valley Pioneers, ranked No. 7 among state 1A schools, turned the tables on the Homecoming celebration Saturday in Friday Harbor and left town with a convincing 22-7 start-to-finish victory over the Wolverines in tow.

Powered by a offensive line weighing 200-plus pounds each, Nooksack Valley dominated in total yardage and in time of possession in the opening half. The Pioneers scored the first two times they touched the ball, including a 90-yard touchdown drive to open the game, and led 14-0 at the half.

After the break, Friday Harbor was back on its heels early in the period, but twice took the ball over on downs thanks to a pair of rugged goal-line stands. But the Pioneers pinned Wolverine running back Roy Taylor in the end zone for a safety and grabbed a 22-0 lead after scoring a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff.

At 3-4, Friday Harbor tumbled below the .500 mark for the first time this season with Saturday’s loss and are winless in four outings against their Whatcom County rivals. They will need a win at home Friday against Meridian or on the road the following week at Lynden Christian to keep any hope of post-season play alive.

Nooksack Valley swept its two-game season series with Friday Harbor and remains undefeated against its 1A foes.

The Wolverines tallied their only touchdown midway in the final period thanks to a fumble recovery by linebacker Austin Scheffer on the Nooksack Valley 2-yard line. Tailback Mike Short was over the top and into the end zone on the very next play, and Cody Price booted the extra point to add the final point on the scoreboard.
