Friday Harbor track competes at state, finishes strong season

The Friday Harbor High School track team has finished their season strong.

Seven of the 20 Friday Harbor High School track and field players competed at the 1B and 2B State Championships on Thursday, May 24-Saturday, May 26 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney against more than 100 schools.

“My guys, they performed above my expectations,” said coach Shannon Plummer of the boys’ and girls’ track teams. “I was proud of them for just getting [to the state tournament].”

No Wolverines received medals, but three team members set personal records at state: Alex Holman in the 100 and 200; Zach Porter in the 300 hurdle; and Emily Vogel in the mile.

From the boys’ team, Henry Duke also performed the discus; Kenneth Hallock ran the 800 and the mile; Zach Porter ran the 110; and Ryan Schaefer participated in shot put and discus. For the girls’ team, Zoe Wegener also performed the high jump.

Eleven track members also competed at bi-districts, on Saturday, May 19, at King’s High School, which sent the seven to state, said Plummer. Six of the seven teammates will return next year.

For Plummer, competing at the state level was a win in itself.

“Being a first-year coach, it’s kind of amazing,” he said.
