The season came to a screeching halt for the Friday Harbor softball team in back-to-back losses to Nooksack Valley at the District playoffs May 15 in Sedro-Woolley.

The Wolverines can take some solace away from the playoffs, however, as they sandwiched a convincing 14-1, five-inning victory over Coupeville in between.

But against a Pioneers squad that knows how to pounce on mistakes, a handful of errors proved costly, Head Coach Kevin Carlton said.

“It’s kind of the story of our season. One or two bad innings put us in situations where we don’t hit the ball well enough to overcome.”

The Wolverines turned out to be their own worst enemy in a 7-1 loss in the opening round, and then, with their season at stake, again in a 7-4 defeat in the consolation final.

With the score knotted at 1-1 in the opener, the Pioneers capitalized on Friday Harbor miscues to tally four runs in the fifth and added two more in the fifth to take control of the contest. Nursing a 2-0 lead in the consolation final, the Pioneers turned miscues in the field into a six-run third inning. Friday Harbor never recovered.

It’s an abrupt end to a roller coaster-like season for the Wolverines, who finished 13-10 overall, 8-4 league, and tied for second in Northwest 1A/2B.
