Friday Harbor soccer team defeats M.V. Christian to take league lead

Friday Harbor is now 4-0 in the Northwest 1A/2B League after beating Mount Vernon Christian 3-1 at home, Tuesday. After their inspired play against Meridian the prior Saturday, the team came out a bit flat and allowed their opponents to control play for much of the first 20 minutes. Still, no goal was yielded and, as the Wolverines stepped up their play, they were rewarded by goals from Whitney Porter (unassisted) and from Ingrid Carlson (assisted by Shelby Ness).

A hand ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick almost saved by keeper Hannah Snow, and the half ended 2-1.

The second session began much as had the first but Friday Harbor came alive much earlier and put on a display of champagne soccer punctuated by a fine unassisted goal by Elle Guard. The defense led by a resurgent Maggie Andersen shut down MVC for the remainder of the game.

Final score: Friday Harbor 3, Mount Vernon Christian 1.

The remainder of the week features games at home against Concrete (10/2) and away at Nooksack Valley (10/4).

Next: The Wolverines host Concrete on Thursday. They travel to Nooksack Valley Saturday. See results on SanJuanJournal.com and in the Oct. 8 Journal.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the team will be selling pins for Kicks Against Breast Cancer.
