Hopes were high after the Wolverines struck early. But two first-inning runs proved all Friday Harbor could muster as Nooksack Valley lit up the scoreboard with some early fireworks of its own en route to a 4-2 win April 3 at home.

The Pioneers (2-4) scored a run in the first and two more in the second, and Nooksack Valley’s Chelsea Pike claimed her first win of the season by holding the Wolverines scoreless over the final six innings.

“Every time we hit the ball hard it seemed to go right at somebody,” Head Coach Kevin Carlton said. “We ripped the ball in the first inning, but after that we got nothing.”

On the mound, senior Kerri Goff overcame a shaky start and held the Pioneers to a single run in the final five innings on the mound. The Wolverines and the Pioneers committed three errors apiece.

“It was a good game,” Carlton said. “They’re well-coached and Nooksack played a solid game. We just didn’t get it done.”

Next: The Wolverines (4-2) face La Conner on the road April 6 in a doubleheader. They travel to Darrington on April 9 for a league doubleheader, and host La Conner on April 13.
