A lot of yards. A lot of firepower. A lot of smash-mouth football.

But in the end — not enough points.

The Wolverines came out on the losing end of a 36-35 turf battle Friday, on the road at Lynden Christian, in the final game of the regular seasaon.

Down 20-14 at the half, Friday Harbor (2-6) scored twice in the third quarter — Nathan Steenkolk capped a scoring drive with a 9-yard TD run and Dylan Radden followed by returning an interception 45 yards into the end zone — to draw within a point, at 28-27, at the start of the fourth quarter

The Wolverines rally fell one point shy, however, as the two teams traded touchdowns in the final quarter of play.

Together, Friday Harbor and Lyncs amassed an eye-popping 452 yards on the ground.

Steenkolk, a sophomore, rushed for 194 yards on 29 carries and tallied four of Friday Harbor’s five TDs. Radden had 52 yards on four carries

According to Friday Harbor sports historian and former Journal reporter Bruce Bennett, the 35 points were the most ever scored by a Wolverines team in a losing effort.
