The Friday Harbor girls basketball team moved one step closer to bagging its first league championship in almost 20 years with a decisive 52-21 win at home Tuesday over Concrete.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead and never looked back after outscoring the lowly Lions (1-10 league) 16-4 in the opening period. They turned a 24-9 halftime lead into a 26-point advantage by the end of the third period, and then let the starters take a break as their backups, who outscored the visitors 14-10 down the stretch, sealed the victory in the final eight minute of regulation.

Junior Maggie Andersen tallied 12 points, sophomore Larissa Nash tossed in 10 to notch a season-high, and eight players put points on the board in the lopsided win. Kelsey Barnes and Liz Taylor netted eight points apiece.

With the win, the Wolverines (10-1 league, 12-5 overall) notched their tenth league-win in a row and their ninth victory in the last 11 games. They have more league wins this season than the past two combined. Teamwork and fan support have been big in helping to fuel the turnaround, point guard Mandy Turnbull said.

“All the encouragement we’ve gotten, especially from the fans, has been great and really helped motivate us,” Turnbull said. “And we just really seem to play well together as a team.”

Only one team now stands between Friday Harbor and its first outright league championship since 1984. The Wolverines, who earned a share of the league title in 1987 and in 1989, can claim sole possession of the league crown with a win at home Friday over Mount Vernon Christian (4-7 league). Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
