Friday Harbor boys win first home soccer game

The Friday Harbor Wolverines boys soccer team shut down the La Conner Braves during their first home game on Sept. 18. By the first half of the game, the score was 4-0, with senior mid forward, Yadir Plaza, scoring three of those four points.

“The game was a continuation in the growth process for our team,” coach Andy Duke said, adding that La Conner battled admirably despite being a small squad competing on a large field.

Friday Harbor wasn’t any easier on La Conner in the second half of the game, starting off with two more scores, one of which the ball sneakily rolled right into the net while the La Conner goalkeeper apparently believed it was out of play and therefore did not attempt to block the pass.

Four more goals were scored during the remaining half hour of the game, including one by senior midfielder Julian Brown and another by junior mid forward Luke Erickson.

“A player that stood out to me in the match was Julian Brown, who demonstrated his speed and ball-handling skills,” Duke said.

Good defense by the Wolverines also prevented the Braves from scoring any points, making the final score of the game 10-0.

The boys will face off against Grace Academy on Friday, Sept. 21 and the next home game will be Sept. 25, 4 p.m. at the Linde Fields against Mount Vernon Christian.
