Thirteen Wolverines advanced to Tri-Districts as Friday Harbor claimed a host of Top 3 finishes at the District 1 Track and Field Meet May 13 and 15 at Lynden Christian.

A shot at State will be on the line as those 13 compete against regional 1A rivals beginning May 20 at the Tri-District Track Meet at King’s High School.

“I am really proud of our kids,” Head Coach Darrin Scheffer said. “Many of the 13 that qualified made it in more than one event. That’s great.”

Senior Kayla Short led the way at the District meet by taking first place in javelin, with a throw of 107 feet 5 inches, and second place in the long jump, at 15 feet 41/2 inches. Short also qualified in the triple jump, as well as part or the girls’ 800-meter relay team, which, with a time of 1:53:34, claimed second place at District. Dasuni Gurushinghe, Jadyn Slack and Mandy Turnbull will join Short in the 800-meter relay.

Junior Kelsey Barnes, with a throw of 34 feet 1 inches, finished first in the shot put. Kia Johns, with a time of 17.66 seconds, finished second in the 100-meter high hurdles. Johns qualified in the high jump as well by clearing 4 feet 6 inches.

Slack claimed first place in the 400-meter run, at 1:05:49. Gurushinghe, at 13.22 seconds, finished second in the 100-meter dash.

Junior Wilson Schubert notched second place in the 800-meter race, with a time of 2:06:86, and helped the boys 1600-meter relay team to advance as well. The team, which also features Adam Allen, Lucas Jagel and Tyler Pruitt, finished third at District with a time of 4:04:73.

Junior Maverick Blake secured a slot at Tri-District by clearing 5 feet 6 inches to clinch second place in the high jump. Jagel, at 57.23 seconds, took second in the 400-meter race.
