Thank you for a wonderful Fourth of July

Executive Director, San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce

On behalf of the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce, I would like to thank all who helped to make this a memorable Fourth of July!

We had outstanding entries, put together in 2.5 weeks! The parade route was packed but not overly crowded, the red, white and blue bunting was hung and there was an unbelievable effort made by the community of our island and the businesses to pull off a patriotic Fourth of July. After we heard the beautiful singing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by Jill Urbach, we had tractors, classic cars, floats, Argyle Street Band, the Legion, the Ladies Auxiliary, the Boy Scouts, Rock Shop Zilla, the ever-popular golden retrievers, businesses, politicians, service clubs and the ever-awesome Pirates. We were proud to honor our Grand Marshal, Parin Columna, and the Honored Citizen, Lori Stokes, who both exemplify the word volunteerism. We were so fortunate to have Alan Budwill announcing again from the Palace Theater and Duncan Wilson at the Presbyterian Church. Thank you to Aaron King and Traci Wilson for stepping in and being the extra set of eyes for the announcers! And to top it off, the weather, not hot or not cold, was just right!

The Firecracker Run, the parade, and Music on the Bricks made for a fun filled day for all. The grand finale of them all was the firework show over the Port of Friday Harbor.

Our list goes on! We have so many to thank! We could not have accomplished any of this without the support of the Town, Duncan Wilson, Justin and Mike Goff, Sheriff Ron Krebs, Sergeant Eric Peter and the deputies, Zack Aiken and his ferry crew, Judy and Jerry Alhadeff for letting us announce and judge from their deck, the Presbyterian Church for setting up the seating area in their driveway and to Benj Ross who went above and beyond to get back to set up the sound system, the Mullis Community Center for letting us stage there and Marketplace for letting the parade participants park there. Then there is more — our lead volunteer — Barbara Jensen, Scott Sluis, Yvonne Buijs-Mancuso, Kris and David Brown, Paul Hopkins, Jana Meredith, Kent Meeker. A big thank you to Susan and Tony Mazzarella for driving Parin in their classic car, Wendy at M&W for loaning us a smart car for me to zip around in and a car for the Honored Citizen.

Finally, the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Kings Market and the San Juan Island Brewing Company for the matching grant for the fireworks, the Town of Friday Harbor Lodging Tax and the generous donations from not only San Juan Island residents but so many visitors! Thank you to all those that helped make the Fourth of July a very big success.
