Ted Gagner | 1928-2018

Ted Gagner, 90, of Anacortes, Washington, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at his residence with his loving wife, Jojo and daughter Sara at his side. He was born on Jan. 16, 1928 in Friday Harbor, the son of Theodore and Mary (McKay) Gagner and was of Cowlitz Native American and European descent. His family lived well from the sea and the land enabling Ted to master the skills as a hunter, fisherman, gardener and logger.

After serving two years in the Navy, at the end of WWII, Ted worked the jobs he knew best on the island. In 1958 he began his career with the Washington State Ferries. Ted moved from the San Juans to Anacortes in 1981. He retired as Chief Mate, from WA State Ferries in 1989, after 31 years of service. While he tenured with state ferries he also continued as a commercial fisherman which he began in 1940; finally retiring in 2004 after accomplishing 64 seasons of fishing.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents; and is survived by wife, Jojo; his children and their spouses: Thea Gagner (Mark Bruce) and Sara White (Todd Fifield); grandchild: Katy Bruce and his beloved pet cat, Punky. He will be missed terribly.
