In loving memory, Sally Louise Sample Shannon, 80, who passed away on April 19, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She leaves behind a legacy defined by adventure, humor and unwavering generosity.
Born in Fresno, Sally led a purposeful life. Her equestrian talent as the 1962 California Rodeo Sweetheart captured hearts, while her passion for adventure shone through global explorations. A dedicated educator, she influenced numerous lives, shaping minds and enthusiasms. Sally’s charitable endeavors left a legacy of kindness, behind her love for education.
Sally graduated from Fresno State with a Bachelor’s in English before earning a Master’s from Fresno Pacific where she pursued a career as both a teacher and Curriculum Consultant. In 1973, Sally married Patrick Shannon and together they shared countless adventures before settling in Lemoore, California, where they established their family. Sally cherished her role as a devoted mother and wife during this time. In 2015, Sally fulfilled her lifelong dream by making Friday Harbor Washington her permanent home. In 2018, Sally found new love when she met Barry Rathfon, with whom she spent the remainder of her life, filled with joy and their cherished canine companions Max and Libby.
Sally excelled as both a gourmet cook and a proficient needlepoint artist. She derived pleasure from a variety of activities including reading, playing bridge, hiking, practicing yoga, collecting beach glass, engaging in Scrabble and completing jigsaw puzzles, all while maintaining a deep commitment to her faith.
Sally is survived by her loving family, her devoted spouse Barry Rathfon, her ex-husband Patrick Shannon(Anjeclica); her adoring children Joe, Katie and Samuel Shannon; her cherished grandchildren Lian (4) Hope, Blaise, Mack, Miles, David and Emma Lou; and her dear sibling Susan Sample Marx (Lawrence Marx III) She is also remembered fondly by her many nieces, nephews and extended family members, and countless friends whose lives she enriched with her warmth and love. She is preceded in death by her parents Muriel and AJ Bud Sample.
Sally will be deeply missed by her family members, friends, colleagues and community members who will always cherish the memories shared and the impact she had on their lives. May she rest in peace.
Sally’s Celebration of Life will take place on July 13th at 4 p.m. at the San Juan Island Yacht Club, 273 Front Street, Friday Harbor WA 98250. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Juan Islands Museum of Art or the San Juan Island Library in Sally’s honor.
