Paul Douglas Flack | 1949 – 2018

Paul Douglas Flack, 68, of Friday Harbor, Washington peacefully passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at his home with his wife Kim, daughter Trisha and grandson Jason at his side. Paul had been battling liver cancer. He was born on June 8, 1949, in Aberdeen, Washington to parents Manford and Mickey Flack joining sister Joyce. He grew up in Westport, Washington and graduated from Ocosta High School. He continued his education at Grays Harbor Community College and later at the U of WA studying horticulture, which encouraged his lifelong passion for plants, flowers and nature.

His work career began and continued in various plant and flower nurseries in the Seattle and Bellevue area and later on to landscape maintenance jobs on commercial and residential properties.

In January 1999 Paul married Kim Wright of North Bend, Washington and soon after moved to Friday Harbor, Washington.

Paul continued with landscape maintenance on San Juan Island and in 2002 was able to begin his lifelong dream of starting a flower farm, specializing in dahlias but included tulips, Dutch iris, sunflowers and many more varieties of cut flowers. New Day Garden/San Juan Dahlias was the joy of his heart, growing and providing flowers at his roadside stand, farmers market and for special occasions.

Paul also loved serving in the local church, Christ The King in Friday Harbor and for a short time Christ The King, Lopez Island.

Paul is preceded in death by his father Manford Flack and mother Mickey Flack.

He is survived by his wife, Kim Flack, daughter Patricia Detrick, grandson Jason Detrick and sister Joyce Lemmon along with many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

A Celebration of Love and Life for Paul will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018, at the Mullis Community Center in Friday Harbor.
