Patrick Charles Roe | Passages

September 6, 1927 – May 26, 2025

Patrick Roe was born on September 6, 1927, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham, Washington, to Charles Roe and Edith Croan. He passed away on May 26, 2025, in Anacortes, Washington—Memorial Day, a fitting farewell for a proud Marine.

Patrick grew up during the Great Depression, a time of profound economic hardship. When his father struggled to find work in Washington, the family relocated to Oklahoma, where his mother secured employment as a nurse. These early challenges shaped Patrick’s resilience and determination—qualities that would define his life.

He served in the Marine Corps for 20 years, first enlisting and later becoming an officer. As an intelligence officer in the First Marine Division, he played a crucial role in the counterattack into North Korea, leading to the harrowing battle at the Chosin Reservoir in December 1950. Faced with brutal sub-zero temperatures and overwhelming enemy forces, Patrick and his fellow Marines fought with extraordinary perseverance, surviving one of history’s most infamous battles. This experience profoundly influenced his worldview, leaving an indelible mark on the man he became.

After the war, Patrick met and married the love of his life, Marjorie Wissert. Together, they raised three sons, and in 1965, after retiring from the Marine Corps, they moved to Lopez Island, Washington. He pursued various professions before finding his niche in real estate. As Lopez Island gained recognition as a retreat for affluent Seattle residents, Patrick’s keen foresight and dedication allowed him and Marjorie to strategically buy and trade land, securing their future in a place they loved.

In 2020, Patrick faced one of his greatest losses when Marjorie passed away. He often spoke lovingly of her, holding onto the cherished memories of their life together.

His perseverance was a lifelong trait, forged by the hardships of the Great Depression and the battle at Chosin Reservoir. These lessons guided him throughout his life, evident in his relentless efforts during the 1980s to purchase and develop Salmon Point with minimal environmental impact. His tenacity not only led to success in his endeavors but also contributed to his long and fulfilling life.

Patrick’s legacy of strength, determination, and love will live on in his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Lopez Union Cemetery on Lopez Island, Washington.
