Charles A. Hudson, “Charlie,” was born in Oklahoma on Sept. 15, 1967. Most of his adventures were in the Seattle area. Charlie moved to Lopez Island, Wash., in May 2002 and fell in love with the island and the people. He said this was the most beautiful place he had ever been.

Arlene Rhonwen Forgie passed away May 8, 2009 in Friday Harbor, Wash., with her daughters and granddaughters by her side. Arlene was born to Leslie and Alice Cannon and raised in Victoria, B.C. Canada. In 1959, Arlene married Hugh Douglas Forgie. They were married until 1991. They raised three children together.

Sharon led a modest life, had a positive, strong-willed spirit and was the rock of her family and friends. Her life on Lopez was full of days at the beach, gardening, keeping up with her kids' musical endeavors, sporting events, making jewelry, knitting, baking and planning events. The smell of fresh baked bread, cookies and pies always seemed to fill her house.

Bob Dann of Friday Harbor, a retired chemist who taught ethnic dance and wrote six novels, has died. Mr. Dann was 87. Funeral is at noon on May 8 at St. David's Church, followed by a brief reception and then interment at Valley Cemetery.

Bill, 90, was born in Friday Harbor, Wash., on Dec. 28, 1918, the only child of Jesse Taylor and Dorothy (Houlton) Taylor.

Ida Pellandini Hammond | Passages

In loving memory of Ida Pellandini Hammond. Ida passed away on April 21, 2009, in Pinegrove, Calif., due to complications of a recent stroke. Nearly 97 years of age, she passed peacefully in her sleep. Ida was born Aug. 10, 1912, in Ceres, Calif., to Louis and Marie Pellandini. She spent most of her life in Sonoma, graduating from Sonoma High School, class of 1931. It is believed that Ida was the last surviving member of that graduating class.

Tom was born in Ukiah, Calif., and was raised in North Bend, Ore. He excelled at many things but was a standout on the football field. Tom played football at Oregon State University and later for the Arena Football League. He made many good friends throughout his life. His bright smile and wit were hard to resist.

Tom Holmes of Friday Harbor died Friday in Islands Convalescent Center. The former college and pro football lineman succumbed after a two-year struggle against Lou Gehrig's Disease. His age could not be immediately confirmed. He was 35 when he was the subject of a front page story in the Sept. 12, 2007 Journal.

Marie Cunniff | Passages

Marie Cunniff could pass her son off as a younger brother and get away with it, crochet an afghan in record time, and at 100 make a TV interviewer blush. She was always punctual, preferring to be early to appointments in the event she could be seen early. "Always wanting to be early, she did, however, surpass her brother Anthony, who passed at 100," her son, Herb Cunniff, said after his mother passed away Feb. 19 at the age of 101.

Her beloved husband, Lance, preceded her by almost two years, having passed away in Tacoma on March 26, 2007. They had been married for 67 years at the time of his passing.

Bonita C. Morrow passed away Dec. 8 in Pendleton, Ore. She was 79. She was born in Friday Harbor, Wash., on Aug. 20, 1929 to Logan and Juanita Crosby. She married John Theodore (Ted) Schuman on July 3, 1949. They had five children together: John Theodore (Jack), Daniel Robert, David Thomas (Tom), James Paul, and Marna Lynn.

Viola “Vi” Lorraine King, age 91, went home to her Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008. She was born to Walter and Hattie (Messenger) Andrus on Oct. 6, 1917 in Blaine, Wash., where she spent her childhood years. She graduated from Blaine High School in 1935 and, shortly thereafter, moved to Friday Harbor to work as a nanny. In Friday Harbor, she met Blair King and they married Oct. 1, 1939 in Blaine. They made their home in Friday Harbor, where together they owned and operated King’s Market for 40 years. In 2001, Vi and Blair moved to Lynden to be near family.
