Mary Kay (Taylor) Vitarelli | 1920-2017

Vitarelli, Mary Kay (Taylor) of Newport Beach, California passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on July 22, 2017. She was 97 years old.

Mary was born April 11, 1920 in Vancouver, Canada to Thirza Cook and Canadian Hockey legend Fred (Cyclone) Taylor. She was the middle of five children and last to survive.

Mary followed her father’s talents on the ice and skated in the 1939 New York World’s Fair. There she met her husband, Arthur J. Vitarelli, married in 1940 and together they skated with the traveling skating show The Ice Capades.

Mary and Arthur settled down in Studio City, California for many years and raised their four children Arthur, Billy, Cheryl (Houle), and Dennis. In their backyard pool she taught swimming to many local neighbors. Mary and Art enjoyed their time in their beach house on Balboa Island and later years moved to Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands in Washington. The island lifestyle fit in well with Mary’s love to sew, needlepoint, crochet, and cook.

After Art’s passing, Mary married close friend Si Stephens in Friday Harbor and enjoyed traveling and playing tennis together well into their 90s.

Mary is survived by husband, Si Stephens, her children and grand children, Taylor, Reid, Madison and Soren. Mary was predeceased by her husband Art and her son Billy.

Mary will be remembered for her outreach to friends of all ages and incredible energy. A celebration of a wonderful life will be held August 26 in Newport Beach.
