J. Adele Grover | 1932-2017

On the early winter morning of Jan. 8, 2017 our beautiful, whimsical, beloved mother, J. Adele Grover, 84, of Eastsound, Washington, left this earth as gracefully as she lived her life and moved on to her next journey. She was born on June 7, 1932 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the daughter of Ralph and Jeanne Gillingham. Adele always found comfort in living near the Pacific Coast raising her six children in the Los Angeles area, then moving to Monterey where she enjoyed many years as the Bridal Consultant for Macy’s. She was “discovered” by a scout while working for Macy’s and whisked off to Maui, Hawaii, loving her profession as the bridal consultant for the Ritz Carlton. Adele created her own business in the 1980’s with La Basquette, a wine and cheese basket delivery service serving all over Monterey County. She was passionate about the things she loved, particularly her peaceful, gentle life at home on Orcas Island where she lived and worked for her remaining years as the host of the Elder Hostel. Adele was a magnificent artist with her knitting talent and will forever keep her children and children’s children warm with the many gifts she created. She was an exceptional cook and baker and if she wasn’t creating a sweater, afghan or scarfs with her knitting needles, she was stirring up something amazing on the stove or watching something mouthwatering rise in the oven. Adele leaves endless recipes behind to be baked by her children and grandchildren for many years and generations to come. Always devoted to her Northwest roots, she was a longtime Seahawks fan. Adele’s legacy is her six children, Susan Waller (Dave), Mark Grover (Melanie), Cindy Sutliff (Mike), Todd Grover, Jenny McNeal and Scott Grover (Michelle); her adoring grandchildren, who all proudly called her “Nana,” Joseph, Brooke, Ashley, Whitney, Trevor, Zack, Erik, Amanda, Stephanie, Rebecca, Wren and Kolby; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Jude, Charlee and Bodhi. Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory Inc., Anacortes and the San Juan Islands. To share memories of Adele, please sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com.
