Francis Daniel ‘Frank’ Mulcahy

Francis Daniel Mulcahy was born in Jersey City, N.J., on Jan. 26, 1939.

His family moved to Keansburg, N.J. in the 1940s. He joined the Navy in 1957 as a sailor aboard the destroyer U.S.S William C. Lawe, which was in the Mediterranean Sea in support of the Marine invasion of Beirut during the 1958 Lebanon Crisis.

After leaving the Navy in December 1959, Frank worked in New York City until entering federal civil service at Naval Weapons Station Earle in New Jersey a few years later.

He married Trudy Caroline Watling, a graduate of Wellesley College, in 1968. They were married for 44 years and raised three children.

After retirement, they moved to Queensbury, N.Y. and later Milford, Del. After Trudy’s passing, Frank moved to San Juan Island in the spring of 2011 to be near family and made his home at the Village at the Harbour. He moved to the Hearthstone Adult Family Home in October 2014 and lived peacefully among the evergreen trees until his death on Feb. 23, 2015.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Trudy, and his siblings, Julia Mulcahy Wallace, Robert Mulcahy, and Dennis Mulcahy.

He is survived by his son Frank Mulcahy (Sally) of Friday Harbor, Wash., and his daughters Kathy Mulcahy (Walter Marks) of Levittown, Penn., and Susan DeMatteo (Peter) of Red Bank, N.J.

He has seven grandchildren, Melissa Marks, Riley Mulcahy, Frank Allen Mulcahy, Peter DeMatteo Jr, Jessica DeMatteo, Trudy Marks, and Christopher Marks.

Frank was an avid hockey enthusiast and was a lifelong fan of the New York Rangers. He enjoyed travel and loved animals. He was proud of his Irish heritage and was an entertaining storyteller.

A memorial mass for Frank will be celebrated on March 18, 2015, at 9 a.m., at St. Francis Church in Friday Harbor. All who knew him and would like to attend are welcome.
