Town Proclaims March as Women’s History Month

Submitted by the Town of Friday Harbor.

March 8 is commonly known as International Women’s Day, and March as Women’s History Month. During their regular Town Council meeting March 16, Mayor Ray Jackson proclaimed March 2023 as Women’s History Month in Friday Harbor. The entire proclamation reads as follows:

WHEREAS, the observance of Women’s History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions that women have made over the course of our national history. Women have played a crucial role in advancing social justice, led groundbreaking scientific discoveries, enriched our culture with remarkable works of art and literature and charted bold directions in our foreign policy; and

WHEREAS, Women’s history is one of resilience, from being denied the right to vote or hold public office until the early 1900s to our nation’s first female Vice President being elected to office; and

WHEREAS, the 2023 theme of National Women’s History Month is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories”; and

WHEREAS, the Women of our nation have stories to tell about their scientific contributions to the early space program, the modernization of computer programming, the development of a vaccine to combat the COVID-19 virus and serving in positions of power in boardrooms, the education system, medicine, politics and the military;

NOW THEREFORE, proclaim the month of March 2023 as

Women’s History Month

in the Town of Friday Harbor and encourage everyone to observe this month by acknowledging the history and achievements of which there are many. I am proud that our citizens – past, present, and future – are respected and recognized for being the foundation upon which this nation was built.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I, Raymont C. Jackson, Mayor of the Town of Friday Harbor have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Town to be affixed this 16th day of March 2023.
