Spring break program offers outdoor adventure for children

Wondering what to do with the children when spring break rolls around?

Here’s an idea.

The San Jan Island Prevention Coalition, San Juan County 4-H and United Way have joined forces to offer a pair of creative, fun and educational programs for children grades 3-5, beginning Monday, April 4.

Vacation Week Games, a weeklong 6-hour class, begins Monday at Friday Harbor Elementary School. Children will be organized into teams and use props and toys as they face and overcome challenging situations, such as how to cross a field of “hot volcanic lava” to reach a survival helicopter and to maneuver around “pools of quick sand” with the help of a teammate. Activities also include creating a plan on how to escape an angry “grizzly bear” who’s protecting her cubs.

The class is 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring a sack lunch and dress for the outdoors.

Staring April 14, the Prevention Coalition, 4-H and United Way will also sponsor an “Afterschool Game Series” program, which will pick up where Vacation Week Games leaves off. The Game Series’ program also takes place at the elementary school on four successive Thursdays, April 14 thru May 5; Classes begin at 2:45 p.m. and run 90 minutes. (Parents are asked to donate $10 for a healthy snack for the Afterschool Game Series; scholarships are available if needed).
