SJI Rotary ‘Dictionary Project’; nurturing future readers, writers, thinkers

Through its Dictionary Project, first launched in '08, the San Juan Island Rotary Club presented dictionaries this year to the 3rd-grade class, thesauruses to 4th graders and "gazetteers" to the elementary school's fifth-grade class.

Friday Harbor Elementary School students are the recent beneficiaries of the San Juan Island Rotary Club’s Dictionary Project.

Under the direction of Barbara Fagan, Rotary’s literacy chairperson, the Rotary Club has provided dictionaries to Friday Harbor students each year since the Dictionary Project was first launched in 2008.

This year, the club presented dictionaries to the 3rd-grade class, thesauruses to 4th graders and “gazetteers” to the elementary school’s fifth-grade class.

The goal of Rotary’s dictionary project is to assist students to become good writers, active readers and creative thinkers.
