A San Juan Island teen was airlifted to a mainland hospital with possible head injuries after being struck by a vehicle Monday night.

The 17-year-old girl was crossing the intersection at Blair Avenue and Guard Street and in a crosswalk when she was struck by a Volkswagon sedan, southbound at the time, at about 8:30 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The driver, a 19-year-old woman from Portland, Ore., was taken into custody on charges of DUI and vehicle assault shortly after the collision. She is being held pending a court appearance on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old woman and a passenger were uninjured, Sheriff Rob Nou noted in a press release.
