Property Taxes and COVID-19

by Rhonda Pederson

San Juan County Treasurer

As many of you are aware, the due date for the first half of the property taxes is April 30. Some property owners have expressed concern over their ability to make the first half payment now that they may have had their work hours reduced or their businesses have been seriously impacted by the current circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

I appreciate the concern over making the tax payments in a timely manner and I am considering ways our office can work with individual owners to lessen the anxiety. It is in this spirit that I encourage those owners who are able, to pay the full year in April to offset those who will not be able to pay in April. San Juan County and many of the special purpose taxing districts rely on the cash flow from tax payments to fund the services they provide (Fire Districts, EMS, Hospital Districts, Health and Community Services, Sheriff’s Department, etc.)

You can rest assured that our office will work with those individuals on a case by case basis. Our office will be available to discuss your situation with you to determine the best course of action to get you back on track.

For those who do not wish to visit the post office, payments may be made online at http://www.sanjuanco.com/314/treasurer or by calling 877-816-9299. Be sure to have your tax parcel number available and note that there is a fee for the service which is charged by a third party servicer. Usually, the least expensive option is to pay through your own bank’s bill-pay feature online but if you choose to pay through our website, an electronic check is the least expensive option.

Please continue to check our website for updated information. You may also contact our office at 360-378-2171.

Please stay safe and take good care of yourselves and each other.
