The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.
April 27
• Deputies served an individual two temporary protective orders on San Juan barring the person from his mother’s residence. Deputies explained the orders to the person being served, who then gathered his belongings and left the location without incident.
• Deputies on San Juan responded to a single-vehicle accident. The driver had mistaken the gas pedal for the brake pedal while parking and went halfway over a retaining wall. The driver was seen by EMS and taken to the hospital.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a threats complaint after a resident reported that a neighbor scared him during a dispute by walking toward him with a hatchet. The matter is under investigation.
April 28
• An Orcas deputy investigated a burglary to a business on Deer Harbor Road. The investigating deputy located evidence of the crime on Cedar Hill Road. A search warrant was authored, and the suspect was arrested.
• A deputy responded to a report of a possible missing person on San Juan. The deputy was able to quickly contact the alleged missing person, and his wife and confirmed he was safe and not missing. Both the deputy and the person involved called to say he was safe.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of a neighbor’s dog at large on the complainant’s property. This is an ongoing issue, and the complainant wanted to know of options on how to handle the situation.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of an incident of fraud. No suspect information exists; the incident was documented.
• A San Juan deputy noted three vessels tied at a county-owned dock without the required permit. All three vessels were posted with citations.
April 29
• An officer on San Juan located and arrested a person wanted on an out-of-county felony and two misdemeanor out-of-county arrest warrants. The man was arrested and booked into jail without incident and is awaiting transport to the respective jurisdictions.
• An Orcas deputy investigated a theft of utilities on Quarry Lane. OPALCO was contacted.
• A deputy on San Juan conducted a service of a protection order issued out of San Juan County District Court with a respondent who lives in Shoreline, WA. Per RCW 7.105.150, this order was served electronically via email, and the return of service was completed and returned to the court.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a juvenile problem involving a juvenile who struck another with a stick multiple times. Each set of parents was contacted and the incident was documented.
• A Lopez deputy responded to an issue at the ferry terminal. A person who was behaving poorly was asked by ferry staff to leave. The person refused, locking themselves in their vehicle. The deputy spoke with the person and convinced them to exit the vessel. WSDOT plans on trespassing the individual.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a driver under the influence who crashed near South Beach. The driver was arrested for DUI and issued a citation for wheels off the roadway.
April 30
• A Lopez deputy responded to two animal-at-large incidents.
• A person reported a solo six-year-old bike rider on Lopez. The child’s parent was nearby.
• A deputy on San Juan took a report of a found phone bag and iPhone that had been left at a local business. The deputy took custody of the items and submitted them into the evidence room as found property.
• A found wallet was turned in at the Lopez station. The owner was located.
• A Lopez deputy was advised of a potentially hazardous tree over a road and requested a response from public works.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle on Turn Point Road and issued them a speeding citation for traveling 42 mph in a 20 mph zone.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a report of trouble unknown.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a residential burglary. The deputy checked for latent fingerprints and located a suspect nearby, who admitted to being inside the house and removing items. The victim did not wish to pursue charges.
• A deputy assisted San Juan EMA with a person who had suffered a fall. The patient was flown off-island for care.
May 1
• A San Juan deputy took a report from a citizen who said that they were illegally recorded in a historic national park. Interviews with involved parties were conducted and a report was completed.
• A deputy on San Juan spoke with a citizen who wanted to report that three mailboxes had been damaged and one thrown into their yard. There is neither suspect information nor workable leads currently.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a non-injury motor vehicle accident in which the vehicle was off the roadway.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a dog-at-large complaint.
• Orcas deputies were dispatched to an unwanted person call. One of the subjects had an unrelated outstanding warrant. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the San Juan County Jail.
• A deputy on San Juan was contacted about the theft of a Jon boat that had been removed from its location in the past three months. A description of the Jon boat was provided.
• A deputy was dispatched to a traffic accident on San Juan and discovered a vehicle off the roadway. The deputy spoke with the driver, and the incident is being investigated as a DUI.
May 2
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a found property call. The items were collected and booked into the property room.
• Deputies were dispatched to a reported verbal domestic incident in a vehicle at the Orcas ferry landing. The driver was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, identity theft, and on an out-of-county felony warrant. The vehicle was impounded and searched.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a parking problem. The deputy placed abandoned vehicle stickers on two vehicles. The deputy then returned two days later to find one car had moved, and the second vehicle with an additional abandoned vehicle sticker on the window.
• A deputy on San Juan went with an in-custody individual to the hospital. The inmate was treated by hospital staff and cleared to return to jail.
May 3
• A Lopez citizen observed a known suspended driver operating a vehicle near the village. The sheriff’s office will be actively monitoring for this individual.
• A Lopez deputy took a report of a brewing domestic situation.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a theft report regarding ferry tickets being sold on Facebook. After multiple people sent the seller money via Venmo, communication was cut off and tickets were not received. The deputy’s report was sent to the prosecutor’s office for a charging decision.
• On Orcas, a deputy was dispatched to an unwanted person call and issued a trespass warning letter.
• A deputy on San Juan took a delayed report of a hit and run with property damage. Currently, there is neither suspect information nor workable leads.
• Deputies on San Juan responded to a single-vehicle accident. The driver was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control and wrecked. The vehicle’s two occupants were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
• A Lopez resident turned in a friendly dog to a Lopez deputy after the dog wandered onto her property on Aleck Bay Road. The dog owner was quickly located and very happy to be reunited with his adventurous pooch.
• A deputy on Orcas took some found property and logged into the evidence room for safe-keeping.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a lost phone located inside of a locked vehicle. The vehicle’s owner came outside and returned the phone to its owner. The phone’s owner did not want to pursue charges.
May 4
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident in Friday Harbor. One person was arrested for assault in the fourth degree – domestic violence and booked into jail.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a fraud call. A San Juan citizen who was attempting to buy art online had their emails intercepted by a Russian scammer.
• A deputy responded to a report of a communications problem in Friday Harbor. The caller reported receiving a call that she believed was a phone scam attempt. The message on the call claimed to be the “Fund Raising Center.” The caller gave out no information and suffered no loss.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of the theft of a package. The theft was documented but no suspects or workable leads were available.
• An Orcas deputy arrested a subject for trespassing. The subject was booked into jail in Friday Harbor and a report was forwarded to the prosecuting attorney’s Office.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to an animal-at-large call. The dog was booked into the shelter.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a report of an oversized vessel in Eastsound.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of mail theft. A description of the stolen item was obtained and deputies will keep a lookout for the stolen property. No suspect information exists at this time.
• A Lopez deputy investigated a theft complaint. A person claimed they parked a fifth-wheel trailer on a business owner’s property and that items were taken from the trailer without permission. The issue was determined to be a civil matter.
May 5
• An Orcas deputy wrote an incident report regarding a civil dispute.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a citizen dispute. Two cats were fighting and one died. The deceased cat’s owner then shot and killed the other cat. The investigation is ongoing.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a non-injury collision. A driver was issued a citation for failing to yield the right-of-way, and a collision report was completed.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a driving complaint. The driver was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and/or drugs.
• A deputy spoke with a Lopez resident about an online scam. The reporting person stated she received an e-mail from someone, claiming to be from PayPal, who claimed she owed money. Fortunately, she was suspicious and no money was lost.
• Deputies responded to a Lopez residence about a possible domestic violence incident. The investigation revealed that two family members had a verbal argument and that no threats or physical assault had occurred. They agreed to separate for the evening and to seek counseling.
May 6
• A deputy was dispatched to a suspicious circumstance in the Friday Harbor area. The caller believed there was someone in their residence. The deputy checked the residence but no one was located.
