Passages: Viola ‘Vi’ Lorraine King

Viola “Vi” Lorraine King, age 91, went home to her Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008. She was born to Walter and Hattie (Messenger) Andrus on Oct. 6, 1917 in Blaine, Wash., where she spent her childhood years. She graduated from Blaine High School in 1935 and, shortly thereafter, moved to Friday Harbor to work as a nanny. In Friday Harbor, she met Blair King and they married Oct. 1, 1939 in Blaine. They made their home in Friday Harbor, where together they owned and operated King’s Market for 40 years. In 2001, Vi and Blair moved to Lynden to be near family.

In Friday Harbor, she met Blair King and they married Oct. 1, 1939 in Blaine. They made their home in Friday Harbor, where together they owned and operated King’s Market for 40 years. In 2001, Vi and Blair moved to Lynden to be near family.

Vi was a member of Rebekah Lodge in the Junior Guild of the Presbyterian Church. She was active in all school events, a member of the PTA and an assistant 4-H leader, and chaperoned many school activities. Vi’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her “Pride and Joy.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Blair; brother, Woodrow Andrus; and grandson, Matt Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Bob) Passarge of Oregon; son, Rick (Karen) King of Lynden; grandchildren, Gerry and Sheryl Passarge, Steve (Kelli) King, Jackie Johnson, and Greg (Natalie) King; great-grandchildren, Alexia, Addison and Ashlin King, and Dustin, Tesa, Taylor and Jordyn Johnson; and her sisters, Lucile (Melvin) Jones of California and Nadine Stock of Ferndale.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 9, 11 a.m. at First Christian Reformed Church, 1010 W. Front St. in Lynden; and on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 11:30 a.m. at Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church, 425 Spring St. in Friday Harbor.
