Now that the trash heap that once was Spring Street Landing is being hauled away, what next?

Although the Journal is confident consultants, designers, engineers and architects will come up with something swell, they won’t have to live with the results for 30 years or more; you will.

One way to make sure the “new waterfront” remains user-friendly and attractive is to make your voices heard on both the design and function of the Friday Harbor shoreline.

Start by attending Thursday’s meeting at the Friday Harbor House conference room, where the latest plans will be unveiled. Let your ideas and feelings be known.

Moving on… Vote ‘Yes’ for the school levy. The district has put forth a solid case, complete with budget numbers and descriptions of how the money will be, and has been, spent A 20-plus percent hole in the district budget would be poor treatment of an award-winning school district.

Then this… the EMS levy is another matter. Yes, the personnel are dedicated and competent. Lives have been saved. Yes, Jim Cole and his team are managing their new building and other assets with intelligence and care. We trust EMS to do the right thing.

But trust may not be sufficient when voters are asked to approve a “permanent” levy with a potential 42 percent increase. Voters should be informed what the money will be used for, what the budget is now and will be in the future, and why the current levy should be cancelled two years before it’s due to expire.

Frankly, on this one, we’re stumped.
