When San Juan County’s new deputy county administrator moved from Hawaii to Eastsound and set up a legal practice in 2007, it was a homecoming.

Adina Cunningham’s parents moved with her to Orcas Island in 1975 when she was in elementary school, and she lived there until 1983.

“Now I’ve come back with my own family,” she said.

Cunningham has three young children. Her husband, Jon Kobayashi, is the general manager of the Outlook Inn; her sister, Sara, is the manager.

County Admin-istrator Pete Rose describes her new job as “an eclectic mix of centralized services to all county departments.” Among her duties: Risk management, real estate negotiations, administering the county’s public defender program, and supervising the administrative staff including Information Services, Human Resources and Contract Management.

Cunningham has a law degree from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark. She served 10 years as Hawaii’s deputy attorney general.

“I have been lucky,” she said. “In my relatively short career, I have been exposed to a wide array of important issues affecting government.”

She joined the county June 2.
