Naked bicyclists stopped on Lopez | San Juan Sheriff’s Log

Three men among a group of a dozen bicyclists agreed to put their pants back on after a deputy confronted them about riding naked on Lopez Island.

San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

June 21: Erratic driving prompted a late-night traffic stop and arrest of an Orcas Island man for DUI on the outskirts of Eastsound. The 31-year-old was pulled over near the intersection of Crescent Beach Road and Montgomery Lane just after midnight following an alleged episode of haphazard driving on Main Street.

Wearing only shoes, backpacks and helmets, the men were reportedly riding naked in celebration of the summer solstice when confronted near the intersection of Fisherman Bay and Dill roads at about 3:30 p.m.

June 22: A fender bender in the Lower Tavern parking lot prompted the late-night arrest of an Orcas Island woman for DUI. The 28-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 1 a.m., reportedly scraped another car’s bumper with enough force while backing out of a parking space that drew the attention of a deputy.

June 24: An Orcas Island woman vowed that she would keep her parrot inside after a neighbor near her Snowberry Lane home complained about its prolonged and incessant day-time squawking. She was warned of an infraction of public nuisance laws and that a $75 fine could follow if authorities received future complaints about the bird.

n An early morning collision on the outskirts of Friday Harbor led to the arrest of an Oregon woman for DUI. The 27-year-old reportedly missed a turn and collided into a shrub, a boulder, a stop sign and street light before her vehicle came to a stop near the intersection of Beaverton Valley Road and Larson Street at about 7 a.m. She was uninjured in the single-car crash.

June 25: An ill-conceived game of golf and confrontation with the maintenance crew at the Lopez Island airport prompted the arrest of a Ferndale man for disorderly conduct and driving a vehicle without a license. The 33-year-old and a friend were reportedly teeing off and retrieving balls on a grassy area near the runway at about 4:30 p.m. while planes were taking off. The Ferndale man, who reportedly drove a van onto airport property, faces a pair of misdemeanors as a result.

June 26: A tip about erratic driving on Cattle Point Road in mid-afternoon prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man for DUI. The 40-year-old was tracked to a parking area near Boling Alley where he evidently pulled over and stopped, but remained behind the wheel while allegedly intoxicated and with the keys to the car in the ignition; he was taken into custody at about 2:30 p.m.

n A fall from a ladder may have led to the death of a San Juan Island man who had been washing windows at the time of the accident. The 65-year-old, who reportedly fell 10-12 feet, was found outside his Pleasant Pond Lane home near the base of the ladder at about 1:30 p.m. About one hour earlier, a different 65-year-old San Juan Island man died after suffering an apparent heart attack while in the Friday Harbor commercial district.
