Island Rec levy and fire annexation successful

On April 27, San Juan Island voters approved both the Island Rec levy renewal and the annexation of the Town of Friday Harbor into San Juan County Fire District No. 3.

The voter turnout for the election — which had four measures including one for Orcas Island — was 45.1%.

With a total count of 551, or 74.66%, residents in the Town of Friday Harbor voted yes for annexation, while 187 town residents voted no. Residents in the fire district, but outside of the town limits, were even more in support of the annexation, with 2,081, or 86.64% voting yes, and 321, or 13.36% voting no.

Finally, San Juan Island Park and Recreation District’s levy renewal — which supports high school sports, several local parks and provides recreational programming for both children and adults — was passed. A total of 2,566 island voters, or 79.84%, elected to approve the levy while 648, or 20.16% rejected the proposal.
