Graduating band students receive $3,000 in scholarships

Submitted by the Friday Harbor Friends of Music

Members of the One More Time Band of San Juan Island and of the Friday Harbor Friends of Music were recognized at the May 29, 2019, Friday Harbor High School Band Community Theater concert for their combined donation of $3,000 in scholarships to six graduating seniors.

The recipients were Julian Brown, Ava Hoffman, Joseph Kaden, Joely Loucks, Tori Polda and Lucy Urbach.

Director Cart Nelsen — who is just finishing his fourth year at FHHS and his 36th as a music teacher and conducting the school band — thanked both the One More Time Band and the Friday Harbor Friends of Music for their contributions as he introduced the recipients to the audience.

Under his leadership and guidance, the high school band now has 64 musician members, and the middle school band has 109.

The One More Time Band is an all-volunteer group of musicians playing big-band swing music and popular dance tunes that donates its earnings to help support the music programs in San Juan Island schools. The musicians come from all walks of life and rehearse most Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the high school band room. Prospective new members are encouraged to bring their instruments and sit in. The band plays a variety of big-band tunes. The ability to read music is a must.
