Kathryn Trinity Root has been charged with furnishing liquor to a minor, a gross misdemeanor, and tampering with a witness, which is a class C felony. Root, 21, is a resident of Friday Harbor.

According to the San Juan County deputy’s report, the father of a 16-year-old girl on San Juan Island called the sheriff’s office after his daughter arrived home heavily intoxicated on Dec. 21, 2017. She had been dropped off at the house by a 23-year-old male. When an officer arrived at the home, the teen was lying on the couch with a blanket and throwing up into a container. According to his report, she was “sweating profusely … had vomit in her hair and her eyes were watery, bloodshot and her eyelids were droopy. … (She) had the heavy odor of intoxicants on her breath.” Her blood alcohol content was 0.086, and she was taken to the emergency room at PeaceHealth.

When questioned by the deputy, she said she’d been “hanging out with bad people” in the parking lot of the Mormon Church and was “pressured” to consume alcohol. She initially admitted to consuming a couple of Mike’s Hard Lemonade drinks but later said it was six or seven shots of vodka. The teen identified Root as the person who allegedly supplied her with alcohol.

On Dec. 22, a deputy interviewed Root about the incident. She denied giving the teen alcohol or consuming it herself. Last May, Root was convicted of driving under the influence, and the conditions of her September release prohibit her from drinking alcohol. She admitted to being in the church parking area but said she had not purchased any liquor that evening. When given a breathalyzer during the interview, her blood alcohol content was 0.001.

On Dec. 23, the officer spoke to a King’s Market clerk who identified Root as a customer who allegedly purchased a bottle of cherry or citrus vodka and soda in the morning and then later in the evening of Dec. 21. According to the deputy’s report, on Dec. 26 the teen confirmed it was the same kind of vodka she was given by Root. She also said Root had requested she change her story so that Root would not be charged with a crime. The girl said her original statements were the truth.
